Playa del Carmen sits on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, about 45 minutes south of Cancun. It's a city that works well as a base: the beach is steps from the main strip, cenotes and Mayan ruins are within an hour's drive, and Quinta Avenida keeps you fed and entertained without needing a car. The water is warm, the reef is close, and the food scene has grown well beyond the tourist staples.

Beach Clubs
Playa del Carmen's beaches run along a calm stretch of the Caribbean with clear turquoise water and white sand. Beach clubs like Mamitas, Zenzi, and Kool offer sun loungers, food, and drinks right on the sand. Most are open to walk-ins during the week, though weekends fill up fast. Arrive early or book ahead.
Golf
The Riviera Maya has some of Mexico's best golf, with courses designed by Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, and Robert Trent Jones II winding through jungle and along the coast. El Camaleon at Mayakoba, Iberostar Playa Paraiso, and Grand Coral are the standouts closest to Playa, each offering caddies, club rentals, and dramatic scenery.
Nightlife & Shopping
Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue) is the main pedestrian strip running through the heart of Playa. Hundreds of shops, bars, and restaurants line the route from the ferry pier north toward Mamitas Beach. The southern end near the pier is busier and more touristy; head north of Calle 30 for a quieter, more local feel.
Restaurants
The food in Playa ranges from beachside tacos to proper tasting menus. Alux, set inside a natural cave, is worth booking ahead. Carboncitos does reliable Mexican classics. For seafood, the ceviche spots along the beach road near Constituyentes are hard to beat. Most of the best places are a short walk from the main strip.
